February is one of the most beautiful and emotionally rewarding times to experience Tanzania. The Green Season brings lush landscapes, dramatic skies, excellent birdlife, and one of the most compelling wildlife spectacles in Africa: the calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region.
This safari is a journey of contrast and rhythm — elegant garden lodging near Arusha, elephant-rich Tarangire, peaceful farm-country hospitality in Karatu, classic tented camp life in the Serengeti, and unforgettable days among the wildebeest nurseries of the southern plains.
More than a checklist of parks, it is a beautifully paced experience of wildlife, comfort, atmosphere, and connection. Exact camps and lodges may vary by departure, but the overall flow and spirit of the journey remain the same.

Arrival in Arusha
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, guests are warmly met by the Instinct Tours team and transferred to a beautiful lodge near Arusha for dinner and overnight. After long international flights, this first evening is intentionally restful, giving everyone time to settle in, enjoy a fine meal, and ease gently into safari pace.
Lake Duluti offers a gracious beginning to the journey — lush grounds, beautiful suites, excellent dining, and space to breathe after travel. The night before safari begins is included in the package, and some guests may also choose to add extra pre-nights in order to rest and prepare more fully for the adventure ahead.

Tarangire: Elephants and Baobabs in Green Season
After breakfast, the safari begins in earnest as guests travel from Arusha to Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania’s most beloved parks and a wonderful introduction to safari. The drive itself starts to tell the story of the country, passing through towns, farmland, Maasai country, and open savannah.
Once inside the park, the roof hatches are raised and the adventure is underway. Tarangire is famous for its majestic baobab trees, especially beautiful in the Green Season when they are in leaf, and for its large elephant herds often seen in close family groups. Wildlife viewing begins immediately as guests make their way toward the lodge.
Two nights here allow guests to settle into the classic safari rhythm: early wildlife activity, time to relax and enjoy lunch at the lodge, then late-afternoon game drives in the warm golden light. Elephants are often the stars, but giraffe, zebra, antelope, birds, and predators may all make appearances. Tarangire Sopa Lodge provides a comfortable and spacious setting for these first unforgettable safari days.

Karatu and the Highland Transition
After Tarangire, the journey shifts toward the cool green highlands of Karatu. This change in setting is one of the quiet pleasures of the itinerary. The open safari landscapes give way to richer farmland, cooler air, gardens, and the sense of entering a completely different face of Tanzania.
Along the route, there may be opportunities for a cultural stop, a comfort break, or shopping depending on the day’s timing and the group’s interests. Once in Karatu, guests settle into the gentler atmosphere of a farm-style lodge such as Ngorongoro Farm House or a similar property. After the dust and drama of game drives, this stage feels especially restorative, with fresh air, beautiful views, and a slower afternoon pace before the next great chapter begins.

Central Serengeti: Tented Camp Life
From Karatu, the safari continues westward toward the Serengeti ecosystem. As the landscape opens and the sense of remoteness increases, the excitement builds. Depending on the departure plan, lunch may be enjoyed en route, at camp, or as a hot or picnic lunch during the day’s travel.
By late afternoon, guests arrive in Central Serengeti and settle into camp. Tented safari accommodations are one of the great highlights of a Tanzanian journey. This is not rough camping, but comfortable bush hospitality — canvas walls, attentive service, and the thrilling sense that you are living within the landscape rather than simply observing it from a distance.
During this portion of the safari, guests may also have the option of a special Rhino Project excursion at additional cost. This unique outing offers the chance to learn more about black rhino conservation while exploring a restricted area with a different style of game viewing. Those who prefer may instead enjoy a more leisurely day at camp, perhaps paired with a later afternoon game drive. This flexibility is one of the pleasures of a well-designed hosted safari.

Ndutu and the Calving Season
After time in Central Serengeti, the safari turns south toward Ndutu and the southern Serengeti plains. This transition is what makes the February safari so distinctive. While many travelers think first of river crossings when they hear “Great Migration,” the calving season is every bit as dramatic in its own way.
By late February, the southern plains can be filled with wildebeest and zebra, and many newborn calves are on their feet within minutes of birth. This abundance draws predators, making the Ndutu region one of the most exciting safari areas of the season. Broad open plains, seasonal lakes, abundant birdlife, changing skies, and the softer tones of the Green Season combine to create a uniquely beautiful atmosphere.
Guests spend several nights here, allowing time to fully experience the region. Lion sightings are often excellent, and with luck there may be cubs, dramatic interactions, or memorable moments of predator-prey behavior. For photographers, this season is especially rewarding because the fresh grass, cloud formations, and rich color palette bring added depth and atmosphere to the images.
Very early one morning, guests may also choose an optional balloon safari over the Serengeti ecosystem, often followed by a champagne breakfast. Those not participating continue with game viewing in the Ndutu area, while all return later to the familiar rhythm of lunch, rest, afternoon game drive, and stories shared over dinner back at camp.

|
Ngorongoro: A Fitting Finale
After an early breakfast, the journey continues to Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where guests descend into the crater for a game drive with picnic lunch. Ngorongoro is often described as one of the wonders of Africa, and it makes a magnificent late-safari finale.
The crater floor offers a very different viewing experience from the open Serengeti plains and often provides excellent sightings in a more concentrated setting. After the crater visit, guests ascend once more and continue to their lodge in Karatu for dinner and overnight. Returning to lodge comfort after tented camp life creates one more satisfying contrast in the rhythm of the safari.

Coffee, Community, and a Meaningful Return to Arusha
After breakfast, the journey turns back toward Arusha with meaningful cultural and community experiences along the way. Depending on timing and group preference, this may include a local coffee farm visit, shopping, or a stop at Unity School, where guests can see firsthand some of the community support and improvements made possible through the partnership between MPJ Tanzania Projects and Instinct Tours.
Instinct Tours aims to make this stage of the safari feel intentional, warm, and reflective — a reminder that Tanzania is not only about wildlife, but also about people, hospitality, and connection. Guests spend the final night at River Trees, Lake Duluti, or a similar Arusha-area lodge.
On the final morning, guests enjoy a relaxed breakfast before airport transfers. For those with later departures, the itinerary can remain flexible, with optional possibilities such as Shanga, final shopping, quiet lodge time, or even an optional Arusha National Park excursion for one last wildlife experience before heading home.
It is the final travel day, but the goal is for it to feel like a graceful ending rather than a spare day — a closing chapter that leaves guests with delight, reflection, and the sense of a journey completed well.
