Stories, photographs, travel notes, and safari reflections from Doug & Marcy

A recent review of my journal led me to several draft entries,  ones where I started a post, and then wandered off for one reason or another.  I started this one five years ago, and I think the stopping point was that I wanted to feature a better example image, but I didn’t have the time to find and process one.  After a bit of pondering, I decided to just do some text editing and keep the original picture.

There are quite a few drafts like this one, and I’ll probably go ahead and publish ones that are still relevant.

The original post

Until last fall, I didn’t even know about boneyard beaches.  They are the ones populated with the bleached remains of live oak, cedar, and bald cypress trees – many toppled when shifting sands left them unanchored.  With their eerie, twisted limbs, shadows, and colors, there are many opportunities to capture great images.

After my post about the beach at Botany Bay, friends sent us suggestions about several great boneyards all along our American southeast coast. Jekyll Island moved to the top of the list, so during our spring photoshoot, we decided to check out the Golden Isle area. This area is about 80 miles south of Savannah, Georgia. It comprises the city of Brunswick and the barrier islands of St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island, and Jekyll Island.

We finished with full camera memory cards,  but arriving in midday under bright blue skies made for difficult photography.  Nevertheless, there were some keepers, like the link below to our print-on-demand service.  Mounted in a rustic barnwood frame, these make great over-the-couch decor.  Marcy has the sunrise image from Botany Bay in stock, and for local clients, it is better to contact us directly for the best pricing, rather than using the website.
